Trump's System of Consequences and Incentives

Donald Trump's intense appetite for revenge has swiftly evolved into a structured framework. Over the past year, the leader's anger and caprices have assumed the form of government actions in ways analogous to historical dictatorial regimes. Justice department officials who resist his demands are promptly removed and replaced by loyalists. Critical officials who question him face legal action, court proceedings and penalties. Critics have been categorized under executive orders as “hostile to national interests”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and warned with criminal charges as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Remade

Each instance involving targeting of critics and protection for supporters displays its own particular features. Yet, regardless of their specific form, they embody manifestations of what has developed as a calculated method. Those events are far from random. The administration's cleansing of federal prosecutors and law enforcement agents, coupled with his appointment of supporters in high-level roles, commenced swiftly, soon took on a pattern, and has now been formed into a structure. DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been transformed into ideological bodies under Trump's clear direction to implement his wishes. Injustice has been turned into routine. It represents the apparatus of revenge.

Leadership is more concerned with punishing the President's supposed enemies than they are with safeguarding our public welfare.

Internal the System

The origin of this framework has been revealed in the court filing of three former high-ranking law enforcement executives lodged in the ninth month in the US district court in Washington against agency head a senior appointee and attorney general a key figure for unlawful firing in “a effort of retribution against them for what the accused deemed to be a failure to show proper allegiance”. According to the filing that a former acting director, the previous acting FBI director, recounts a conversation in which Patel “freely admitted the unlawfulness of his actions”.

The official had sought to shield law enforcement officers from being fired, the lawsuit alleges. He informed him that “administration officials” – understood by Driscoll to be the White House and DoJ – had ordered him to dismiss anyone who they determined as having participated in a law enforcement case against him. The document adds: “He explained that he had to dismiss the people his superiors told him to remove, because his ability to hold his own job was contingent on the removal of the officials who were involved in matters involving the chief executive. He noted that there was no way he or the official could do to prevent these or any other dismissals, because ‘the FBI attempted to place the chief in prison and he hasn't forgotten it.’” When Driscoll informed the director he was disregarding the bureau's own policies, Patel allegedly said “he knew that and he realized the nature of the summary firings were likely illegal”.

Widespread Consequences

After his alleged admission to Driscoll, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been gutted and repurposed for the administration's system of punishment. Several of the agency's senior executives were terminated or compelled to leave in the initial period of the presidency. About 4,500 professional attorneys at the justice department have accepted a “voluntary departure plan”. A minimum of multiple DoJ lawyers, among them those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in protest over what they viewed as partisan influence in dropping the criminal prosecution against the local official, a political figure, in as a trade for his assistance with the administration's ICE roundups of foreign nationals. The anti-corruption unit of DoJ, which handles ethical violations, has been cut down to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been severely reduced: 70% of its personnel has resigned. 33% of senior leaders at the justice department have resigned. The unit enforcing environmental law has seen departures of 50% its management.

Rewards and Penalties

Concerning the mayor's situation, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, she, quit in dissent against what she characterized as the “trade-off”. Tom Homan, his “border czar,” was present as the agent with him on Fox News to announce: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll reappear in NYC.”. Additionally, another figure, formerly the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who arranged the deal, was awarded an judicial position, a potential pathway to the supreme court.

The president's immunity for wrongdoings carried out while in government, granted by the remarkable judgment of the conservative on the judicial body, thus thwarting his prosecution over the January 6 insurrection and maintaining his political viability for the presidential race, is the cornerstone on which he relies to protect his supporters. Given this protection, he has been freed to permit misconduct. The consequence of the supreme court decision permeates his presidency and the Republican Party thoroughly. The legal case has metastasized. As a past leader's White House counsel he said about the Watergate
