Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
