Meteorological Balloons Employed to Contraband Cigarettes Closed Vilnius Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
No fewer than 11 of the meteorological balloons, carrying 18,000 packages of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.

Aviation Problems

The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Cross-Border Effects

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.

Illegal Transport Methods

In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.

Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
