Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
